Sandhill cranes

Post by backwoods doc »

I was surprised to see a pair of sandhill cranes at Wood Lake a few days ago. Sorry - no photos.

I have seen /heard them in the wetland pockets north of the Greenstone and on the north side of Siskiwit. They generally like open areas. Were they in a shallow bay or on land? Not sure if there are breeding pairs on IR. Love Sandhills.

I always find their calls to be quite startling, and they tend to echo off the hillsides. That would be quite an experience on the island.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are happy in beaver meadows or swampy ends of some of the inland lakes.

I remember hearing Sandhills back in the 90's, someplace on IR. They do hang out in old beaver floodings. According to the Park Service, they do breed on the Island.

Scared up a pair the Greenstone somewhere around Mt Siskiwit, some years ago. Well, they scared us with the first squawk, lol.

They were in the water, near the shore, standing in some reeds.
