Re: McCargoe to Chippewa Harbor
How is the segment from Lake Ritchie to Chippewa Harbor? The reason I ask is that I'm mulling what may be a harebrained scheme to do a one day speed hike from McCargoe to Chippewa around the solstice. I've been on all of the segments around there previously but haven't checked off that last bit.

Rain jacket or windbreaker replacement
My 20+ year old Columbia jacket has finally passed the point of being sufficient repairable to keep me dry, plus I have the funds to upgrade. It was good enough to keep me dry in a drizzle or light rain almost all day. I'm looking to replace it with something that will do the same, or possibly going ...

ISO: Malone Bay trail update
Anyone take the trail down to Malone Bay last season? How is that beaver dam crossing holding up?

Re: Campsite Water Source Question
Adding on to both Into and JerryB; I was at Island Mine in September 2023, even after a summer of low rain there was still running water. Definitely low, but there. One of my traveling companions was squeamish so we did filter and also boil, but it was fine.

Thanks for letting me know! Link should be working now.dcclark wrote: Fri Aug 25, 2023 5:45 pm Neat photo, and map too. The link wants me to request access -- could you allow anybody with the link to view it? I'd love to look at the map up close.
1973 Map
I've been going through boxes from my dad and came across this neat 1973 map, showing the old trail to Feldtmann Lake. Interesting descriptions in the margins. I scanned it in and I'm still working on aligning and color correcting but I wanted to share the rough draft. Also, a picture of my dad from ...

Re: Trip plans: Windigo, N Desor, Hatchet, Malone Bay
Tagging off of S_R_I's post above, I did the trail down into Malone Bay last spring, at the time there were a couple points I went off trail and had to find my way back. It's not a difficult or challenging trail, but it does take some time. It's worth it as an end destination in my opinion. You may ...

Re: TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]
Thanks for the report. I did the Feldtmann loop a few years back at the same time of year, and it was also rather wet and cold, but still a great trip. Did you seen any moose at Feldtmann? They were all over the campground and in the lake that year. I also appreciate the nervousness of getting ...

Re: TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]
I also appreciate the nervousness of getting picked up by the VII--I've done it 1/2 dozen times without any issues but still get nervous about missing them, or them missing me!
One more reason to carry a bit extra food, at least under these circumstances. Also consider taking a marine radio ...

Re: TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]
Feldtmann Loop ending at Malone sounds like a nice yet a bit challenging route, especially so early in the season.
Did you have a tent? My first impression was the garbage bag was your major cover?
My estimate for the tree removal at South Desor was for safety reasons. Were they Birch (or maybe ...

TR: 5/25-5/29, 2022 [Hiking] [Windigo to Malone Bay via Feldtmann Loop]
Better late than never, but I haven’t seen much info on the trail to Malone Bay so I wanted to share my experience. It was my first solo, but 4th trip to the island. General notes: it was pretty wet the whole time I was out, and cold, to the point that I pretty miserable the first night and ...
