Re: august 2025 feldman loop report

Bear cabinets: ... At Feldman, neither we nor any other group there could locate the cabinets, so the site looked like one big Christmas tree with weird Ursak ornaments all over the place.

I just got back from the island. I too stayed at Feldtmann Lake and could not locate the wolf safe food ...

Re: gravity filter recommendation

The one problem I've found, at least with the Platypus, is that after long term storage (from August to May) it can become extremely slow. I can sometimes coax fast filtering back out of it, but after a few years they get quite slow again, even with little use.

Are you doing sanitizing and ...

Re: gravity filter recommendation

It works well for me and has a decent flow rate. But, I also keep up on the maintenance of my Sawyer Squeeze by backflushing and disinfecting it after every trip.

I've never used a gravity water filter. I have a couple of questions...

1. How long does it take to filter 1L of water?
2. What is ...

Re: food weight

For my upcoming September trip to Isle Royale, I'm taking 8.7 lbs food for 6 days. That is 1.45 lbs/day.

Re: Soliciting Valued Opinions on a late season trip

I am primarily an after Labor Day hiker. Like Ingo said, the weather can be good and the bugs will be gone. The only slight disadvantage I experience is a lack of daylight the later I trek in September. Sometimes my slow pace and long hiking distances brings me into the destination campsite without ...

Re: Two Campers Found Dead on IR

I wonder if the redblackrider group, that left South Desor at 11pm to hike the 11 miles to Windigo, came across the 2 rangers in the dark that hiked 11 miles from "somewhere" to the probable crime scene, arriving before dawn.

The redblackrider group left Friday night; the rangers left Sunday ...

Great report. I've learned that it may not be wise to leave my food in the storage locker during my zero mile/layover days.

Re: wilderness stewardship plan overview

2 of the plans would eliminate the section of the Indian portage trail between the lake Richie trail and the lake Richie portage, meaning Chippewa harbor would become another water access site only

I sure hope they don't eliminate that short section of the Indian Portage Trail. About 50 ...

Re: 5 day trip, looking for recommendations

With such a short visit, there is not much room to vary your itinerary away from a direct end-to-end hike. If your legs feel strong on the first day, you could make it to Lake Desor South. It is a great campground with a nice swimming beach. Moskey Basin campground is not to be missed, but it can ...
