The 1890 picture of Chippewa Harbor is from an old book I have (The Life of Isle Royale). I took this book along on our first kayak trip to Chip back in 1991. I tried to locate the exact spot where the 1890 photo was taken and came fairly close. Different camera formats (1890 view camera and a 1991 film SLR) and lenses, account for the different perspective. You'd never know those settlements were even there today.

I wonder how long it took for the remnants of those building to disappear, if they have totally?
Very cool comparison.

There is one cabin left. Go to the “Picture of the Week” thread for another view of Chippewa harbor in 1991. You can see the roof of a cabin in the last pic I added.

While departing Chippewa Harbor this past September on the Voyageur II, the First Mate mentioned there are some underwater pilings still visible at the southeastern edge of the old fishing village. If you look at the satellite view on Acme Mapper or Google Earth, you can see them rather clearly.

I thought I saw something saying that the cabin seen in the recent pic was was built later on in the 30s.treeplanter wrote:There is one cabin left. Go to the “Picture of the Week” thread for another view of Chippewa harbor in 1991. You can see the roof of a cabin in the last pic I added.
