Hey everclear should always be in your first aid kit, it can sanitize stuff like rubbing alchohol for outside boo-boos, and act like whiskey to help with the inside boo-boos...

Re: Loon kills Bald Eagle
When we were there last year another group saw a loon kill a baby merganser. As they said no reason they could see for it, the loon surfaced under the flock of mergansers and just grabbed one, broke its neck and left it there.

Re: Rock Harbor campground - does it fill up / campers turned away?
One of several nice things about taking the Queen from Copper Harbor is that it gets there several hours before the Ranger. Each time I have taken the Queen we've walked past empty shelters/empty sites for RH but once the ranger shows up they fill right up. The last trip we stayed in RH as my hiking...

Re: What Food Is Best?
I started dehydrating all of my meals and never looked back. .... My camping buddy/brother is a fiend about ultralight equipment. His one-man tent cost more than my whole rig. However, when it comes to food, he's pretty much the opposite. He hates commercial freeze-dried meals and if I bring any of...

Re: Beginner trip for 12 and 9 year old boys
The best piece of advice I can give is to listen to the kids and adjust accordingly. I've brought my kids camping since shortly after birth for all 4 of my daughters. Last year was the first trip to the Island for the oldest (15) and we took kayaks. Took it fairly easy did a bunch of hiking, but ove...

Re: September Weather
dcclark,
Its funny both of my trips (a week, and a week plus) we had ZERO rain at least during the day. Just goes to show, its a flexible environment there.
Expect a little of everything with the big lake!

In the field? Duct tape. If its in an inconvenient location (like your case) I have some sealeant in my air mattress puncture sealing kit. Just enough to get you out of the woods as it were. At home, replace

If you're not particularly tall, I've been eyeing this for a while personally... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MCT6QSM Not freestanding, but one trekking pole and its under 2lbs if you go by trail weight. If you are set on freestanding, they have this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K84DZ88/ at 2.6l...

FWIW, Tarptent rainbow is free standing when used with trekking poles.

Re: Early September Rock Harbor Loop 9/4 - 9/8
Thank you all. There is a lot to consider in terms of routes forsure but planning is half the fun! I have continuously heard about the island being more rugged than expected but the group i am going with are seasoned bunch. Thank you everyone for the suggestions! FWIW, I recommend a stair climber f...

Re: Easy Itinerary
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but as I told my kid before going last year "There is no such thing as an easy trail on IR". Remember this as you are planning and prepping. The climb from West Chicken Bone to Livermore/Lasarge can be daunting to someone who is not used to hiking w...

Re: Will I need a sleeping bag liner?
So like most folks here, what I say will depend on you a lot. What temps are you comfortable in that bag? Do you eat before you go to bed? What is your sleeping pad? What do you wear for sleeping? Each individual is different. My wife was all sealed up and cuddled up in an optimistically rated 0 deg...
