Re: Aurora Borealis
I think I am cursed when it comes to the Aurora. I only ever saw them once when I lived in the UP. Last night, my neighbors all claimed they could see the lights, but standing outside with a clear sky I couldn't find a thing! Next time (whenever that is), take a picture towards the north and see wh...

Check with the rangers when you arrive--you'll likely get better current information.

Re: favorite trail and campsite
It's like asking someone which of their children is their favorite. There's the coziness of Island Mine, enhanced by a campfire and friends; being tucked into a shelter at Malone Bay while gale force winds blow; loons at sunset near the groups campsites at South Lake Desor; the springtime cacophony ...

Re: Historical data on Hatchet Lake and Chickenbone Lake algal blooms
Caching water—what a good idea! It's only a trace if it's not picked up...right? That could be a real option around day 14, and there are a couple of ways to protect a cache from wildlife.
Changing the itinerary isn't impossible, but indeed, it would complicate thoroughness.
Thanks!

Historical data on Hatchet Lake and Chickenbone Lake algal blooms
There's a part of my Minong thorough hike that has me going from Malone Bay to Hatchet Lake to East Chickenbone to Daisy over three days. I've now adjusted my departure date to on or about July 1, 2026. Both of those lakes are prone to algal blooms, so it would be helpful to know when algal blooms h...

Zebra11, did you ever make this crossing to Passage Island? I'm curious about your experience.

Re: Itinerary Feedback
Once you land on the island, the most important thing is to show up for the boat at the end of your hike.
Probably the only trip on which I didn't make itinerary changes on the fly was my Belle Isle trip.

Re: Itinerary Feedback
Since you're taking the VII, I suggest disembarking at McCargoe Cove and forgoing the Feldtmann Loop (on this visit). Also orienting your departure location to Chippewa Harbor or Daisy Farm rather than Rock Harbor. and adjusting your itinerary towards that end. This gives you easier access to Todd H...

Re: Where was I?
dcclark wins! I never noticed them, until one day a couple of years ago a shaft of sunlight hitting the box on the left attracted my attention. I'm impressed--I really thought that one would be harder.
@torpified for what it's worth, they're closer to Three Mile than to Daisy Farm.
